If you are running Bitcoin-QT and you do not have port 8333 open from the outside world to your node (the machine running bitcoin-QT), then you are not helping the bitcoin network.
Hover your mouse over the bottom right corner of your Bitcoin-QT client. If it shows 8 or fewer connected nodes, you most likely do not have port 8333 open. Port 8333 is the port that other bitcoin nodes use to connect to your node.
