If you are running Litecoin-QT and you do not have port 9333 open from the outside world to your node (the machine running litecoin-QT), then you are not helping the litecoin network.
Hover your mouse over the bottom right corner of your Litecoin-QT client. If it shows 8 or fewer connected nodes, you most likely do not have port 9333 open. Port 9333 is the port that other litecoin nodes use to connect to your node.
